Historic Discovery: Seabourn Submarine Uncovers Lost German Ship off Chile’s Coast

On Monday, October 14, 2024, a Seabourn Pursuit submarine expedition made an extraordinary discovery off the coast of Alejandro Selkirk Island in Chile’s Juan Fernández Archipelago. The ultra-luxury expedition ship located the Titania, a German supply vessel lost for over 110 years, marking the first sighting of the ship since it disappeared in 1914.

“Discoveries like these epitomize the spirit of adventure, and this one is truly historic,” said Robin West, Seabourn’s vice president and general manager of expeditions. “Our submarine explorations often take guests to uncharted territories, and I’m incredibly proud of our expedition team for delivering this once-in-a-lifetime ‘Seabourn Moment’ to both our guests and the local community on Selkirk Island.”

The submarine team, led by Pilot Mauricio Fernandez, worked closely with local fisherman Gino Perez, who had long suspected the ship’s possible location. Guided by Perez’s knowledge and with perfect weather conditions, the team uncovered the Titania 95 meters (311 feet) underwater, about 4.25 nautical miles northwest of Selkirk Island. The island’s harbor master confirmed that no other submersible or diver had visited the site before, making this a true discovery.

Reflecting on the moment, Fernandez said, “We were witnessing history in real-time, and our guests were part of that incredible discovery—seeing the Titania for the first time in over a century. This is what Seabourn expeditions are all about: delivering unforgettable moments of discovery.”

One guest, Irene Blume, described the experience as “magical” and “extraordinary.”

For Perez, whose family has deep ties to the island’s history, the discovery was particularly meaningful. “I imagined this ship so many times, and now I can finally see where she rests. This means so much to our family and the history of this island. It’s truly extraordinary,” he said.

Though fishermen had occasionally found metal fragments believed to be from the Titania, this marks the official discovery of the ship, thanks to Seabourn’s cutting-edge exploration.

The discovery of the Titania is not only a remarkable feat but also a testament to the ongoing legacy of exploration that Seabourn brings to its guests.
